Today is the fillies/mares portion of the Breeders' Cup and like every previous Championship day, there is money to be made if you have the guts to go against the favourites.
The first B.C. race is the Filly and Mares sprint, race 3 on the Santa Anita card today. It sure looks as if this will be a cutthroat pace and I find it interesting that the girls have to sprint 7 furlongs, while the colts tomorrow will go just six. It looks to me as if the pace will favour a come from behinder, so I'm going with #3 Intangaroo, #8 Tiz Elemental and # 12 Ventura. I would suggest $1 exactors with 3, 8 and 12 on top and 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, & 12 on the bottom. That will cost $15 and there are many scenarios that should kick back at least $50 for $1.
The next BC race is the Juvenile Fillies Turf and it's a mind-freaker. There's only about 10 fillies in this 12-horse field that could win, but I'm looking at #2 Laragh with Edgar Prado, the late charging #11 Saucey Evening ( Garrett Gomez) and certainly the Canadian content, #4 C Karma (Cornelio Velasquez). They'll be coming from everywhere in the final half furlong. Buy $2 doubles from the sprint : 3, 8 & 12 onto 2, 4, & 11 and worry that #8 Sugar Mom will ruin the plot! That will cost you $18. If you throw in Sugar Mom, it costs $24.
Next up...the two year-old fillies go a mile and a sixteenth for $2million and much as I loved Tom Durkin's hilarious call ( check it out on YouTube) of Doremifasollatido's first win, I'm going against her here with #6 Van Lear Rose and Chantal Sutherland. Chantal rode brilliantly at Woodbine and her price on Van Lear Rose will be as pretty as her face. #4 Sky Diva (Ramon Dominguez) looks like a monster and #8 C.S. Silk (Robbie Alborado) is also in the mix - consider his last race and his last workout! . # 5 Be Smart (Gomez) also scares me. Take Van Lear Rose and Sky Diva on top in exactors with #2 Persistently, #8 and #13, Doremifasollatido. #4 & #6 with #2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 13 = $10
Now we have the Older Filly and Mare Turf.Canada's Sealy Hill looks over her head here - her out-of town trips have not gone well. The French horse Maurakalama, #7 has all the credentials and has won 11 of 25 career races on the lawn for over $1.5 Million. #3 Forever Together and #5 Wait A While have each won 3 of their last 5 on the grass. I think #6 Dynaforce will not appreciate the hard course at Santa Anita as much as she liked the yielding stuff in her Flower Bowl win last month at Belmont. Watch out for a late run from # 2 Vacare. What am I saying? $1 exactors -3, 5, & 7 with 2,3,5,7 and 8...that costs $8. Take 3,5 and 7 in the second leg of a double with 4, 5 and 6 from the first leg = $18.
Today's 5th and final BC race is the Ladies Classic ( which sounds more like a golf tournament than a mile and an 8th on the Pro Ride!). The super filly Zenyatta is here...with 8 wins in 8 races and we will not bet on her...We like #4 Music Note (JJ Castellano) who has won 4 of her last 5 and we also lean to Frank Stronach's Ginger Punch (Rafael Bejerano) who has won 4 of 6 at this distance. Pound those two on top in exactors -4 & 6 with 1, 2, 4, 6 and 7. Canadian entry. Also buy doubles from the previous race # 3, #5 & #7 onto #4 and # 6. If Zenyatta goes down, your bankroll goes up.
Summing up:
Santa Anita Race 3 $ 1 exactors -3, 8 and 12 on top with 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, & 12 =$15. $2 doubles 3, 8 and 12 with 2,4, 8 & 11 +$24
Santa Anita race 5: $1 exactors #4 & #6 with #2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 13 = $10
#2 doubles 4,5, 6 with 3,5,%& 7 in the next race = $18
Santa Anita Race 6: $1 exactors -3, 5, & 7 with 2,3,5,7 and 8
$2 doubles 3,5 & 7 with 4 & 6 = $12
Santa Anita Race 7: $1 exactors 4 & 6 with 1, 2, 4, 6 = $6
